Abstract
The technological objectives and realization of the 20/30-GHz propagation experiments planned as part of the Olympus direct-broadcast satellite program are discussed. The experiments are designed to measure (1) the absolute attenuation of vertically polarized signals at 12.5 and 30 GHz and of vertically and horizontally polarized signals at 20 GHz; (2) amplitude and phase cross-polarization discrimination at 12.5, 20, and 30 GHz; and (3) differential attenuation and phase between vertical and horizontal polarization at 20 GHz. In addition to the Olympus satellite, the experiments involve the main and auxiliary receiving stations and additional ground-based radiometers and meteorological sensors. The relevant satellite payload components and the hardware configurations of the ground stations are described in detail and illustrated with extensive diagrams and flow charts; numerical data on component performance are also provided.
